The desire to concoct cultural league tables seems almost as deep-seated as the desire to make the culture in the first place. But classical music has, until now, largely been excluded from these ranking games. True, it has its annual awards. But rarely are superb recordings from different eras and of different repertoire measured against each other.
That's a pity. Some recordings acquire such legendary status that they deserve to be more widely trumpeted. So we invite Times readers to take part in a little game of CD ranking.
For the past 30 years Gramophone magazine has anointed one superlative recording each year as its Gold Disc. Naturally that award is ferociously debated. But imagine the delicious controversy if a panel of experts were rash enough to whittle those 30 discs down to just five recordings that changed the musical world. And imagine the fun and furore if a newspaper then asked its readers to choose the best of these.
That's what we want you to do. Vote for the recording that you think should win the All-Time Gold Disc at the Gramophone Awards this autumn. The five contenders will be introduced individually on these pages this week. But in brief they are: Nikolaus Harnoncourt's gloriously iconoclastic version of Beethoven's symphonies; Herbert von Karajan's magisterial account of Mahler's Ninth Symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic; the original version of Vaughan Williams's London Symphony, stunningly recorded by Richard Hickox and the LSO on Chandos; the Haydn Piano Trios recorded by the peerless Beaux Arts Trio; and Stephen Hough's revelatory set of Saint-Saëns' piano concertos. One of these will soon be acclaimed as the finest recording that the CD era has yet produced. Make sure you have a say in the decision. Voting closes on September 14.

I would have loved to send a first vote to build up a list of 25 or 50 'better' CDs - i.e. a chosen list from which the final best appreciated recording could then be elected... but these 5 average-rated recordings (+ no baroque, no voice) picked up by so-called experts? No, I won't vote this time.
C. Songeur, ANtwerp, Belgium
Thoroughly agree with Syd Houghton-Hill.
The finest recording I have heard this year is of a live orchestral concert, the way they should be. Not only that but it includes the only recording available of the Philharmonic Dances by Jan Novak.
The vote should be on all available CD's.

There is no such thing as 'the best' recording. This conceptually idiotic idea is further invalidated by having to select from a pre-chosen short list. Which self-appointed arbiters of taste have the audacity to present us with this selection? The one most value above others would be interesting.
Syd Houghton-Hill, Telford, UK
Your choices are substandard. Solti's Ring is the greatest accomplishment whether you like it or not.
David Goyder, Southampton, UK
Get real people - just listen and enjoy. Its a bit of fun. As for the Solti Ring, it was last seen sitting on the Solti Bog.
John, Kidderminster, Worcestershire
I feel very sorry to watch the decadence of a once great magazine. This is just one silly gimmick more to give "voice" to its readers, while at the same time insulting their knowledge and taste with so poor a choice of CDs. Karajan has done better, and so has Hough and Harnoncourt.
Elysio Correia Ribeiro , Lisbon, Portugal
I possess or have heard all these nominations. None of them get into my top 20. How I agree with Catherine!
This idea is yet another example of the shallowing and trivialising effect of current media presentation ideas designed to promote particular interests. Crass. I vote against all of them!
David , Worcester Park, UK
I am disappointed not to find the Emerson Quartet's marvellous recording of the Shostakovitch quartets.
P. Dunn, Headington, Oxford, U.K.
Where, exactly, is the Solti Ring?
Hugh Christian-Cartr, Reading, Berkshire
Of this ridiculously limited choice, the Karajan - an interpretation of remarkably sustained intensity and nobility. His Bruckner 7, 8 and 9 would rank equally - and many others.
David Woodhead, Leatherhead, England
Why no Furtwängler? Before and better than von Karajan - and he didn't join.
Jeremy Broadribb, Horsham, UK
From this list it's gotta be Hough - amazing set of recordings
Joe Peters, Cleveland, USA
Gotta go with the Vaughn Williams.
Bruce L. Northwood, Washington, D.C., USA
I vote for Stephen Hough & Saint-Saens
J Derek Teare, Grantham, NH, USA
Paging Philips paging Philips: How about making the Hadyn available so we can hear it?
Malcolm, Chicago, IL,
As a classical musician I woudn't choose any of these! Haitink & Vienna Phil/LPO for Mahler 9, Carlos Kleiber& Deutche Rundfunk for Beethoven, Davis and LSO for Vaughan Williams(Beaux Arts maybe) and as for the Saint Saens...rather pointless! Where's Gould's Bach, Gergiev's Prokofiev? How silly.
Catherine, London,
i vote for stephen hough's saint-saens recording
neal gripp, Montreal , canada
I agree with David: this is fatuous and childish. And typical of the decline of Gramophone from a once great magazine to its present tawdry incarnation. My greatest CD of the last 30 years (itself a very silly idea: one greatest CD? daft) would be none of these.
Will Duffay, London,
What a silly enterprise. And why do the five chosen recordings have to come from Gramophone award winners? Strange that there is one choice per major label. But then as we all know this is another marketing gimmick to try to sell these records, disguised as a competition. Why is Naxos excluded?
David, Malvern, UK
