In this week's podcast Nicola Christie meets radical cellist Matthew Barley, Times religious affairs correspondent takes herself along to Bach's St John Passion and we hear a new take on Brahms Third Symphony from one of the LSO's budding composers Ray Lui.

First up we speak to a cellist, arranger, producer and general adventurer Barley as he prepares to perform one of the iconic works of the twentieth century, Messian's Quartet for the End of Time, written and first performed in 1941 at a German prisoner-of-war camp.

When did Barley first discover the music? "When I was at school in Manchester 20 years ago, I'd never heard of the piece, it was amazing to discover it, it was so different to anything I'd ever played. A complete one off."
