Sir, Unlike Anna Warburton (letter, Aug 18) I see little wrong with Shona Waugh getting a prison sentence for stealing a credit card “to buy food for her children”. If, of course, that was her real intention, with that being the excuse given by many criminals to try to excuse their crime.

Let’s not forget that we live in a country where those with youngsters receive more help from the State than ever before, with the likes of child benefit, working family tax credit and a payment of just under £49 a week for each dependent child if you happen to be on income support or job seekers’ allowance.

So today’s mothers should be able to manage their finances without feeling compelled to break the law.
