Quiet, please

Tips for silence wanted

Sir, You report (Aug 18) the reintroduction of a frog common in olden times. In those days it was recommended in at least one gardening book that lanterns be hung in trees “to appear as the sun” so as to quiet their croaking at night and allow villagers to sleep.

When we first moved to our village here in Wiltshire our elderly next-door neighbour told us how as a boy he had been paid to throw stones at the bramble bushes to silence the nightingales that sang so loudly. Can anyone please suggest a remedy to silence modern noise pollution?
