Do the scientific claims on your cosmetics add up? This week's product was suggested by Sarah Bromage from Devon.
They say “Offers immediate hydration to drier, delicate skin. Helps to minimise fine lines.”
We say Sarah tells us this is one of the few creams that doesn't bring her out in a rash. This is probably thanks to the fact that Clinique products are fragrance-free, as perfume is one of the main causes of skin reactions. But can this product tackle wrinkles? Clinique claims that it does, with the help of one of its key components, the sci-fi- sounding “mnemonic technology”.
The technology contains caffeine and vitamin B6, which Clinique claims “accesses skin memory”'. This induces it to produce lipids, more commonly known as fats. Although normally associated with heart attacks and muffin tops, lipids play many crucial roles in our body. One such is maintaining a healthy skin barrier and preventing it from drying out. But can caffeine boost these lipids? According to Tamara Griffiths, a dermatologist from the British Skin Foundation, “there is an absence of convincing data to suggest that application of caffeine in a cream form will stimulate or promote this barrier”. Further, there is a lack of evidence to suggest that vitamin B6 will benefit the skin. However, the cream's antioxidants may help to protect against sun damage.
So does it work? Despite the mnemonic technology being a bit of a damp squib, this cream will still tackle fine lines. Why? Because one of its main ingredients is glycerin. This acts as a moisture magnet in the skin, hydrating the top layer. Science Factor 3/5.
Feel-good factor Gel-like texture, slightly greasy.
Worth buying? For a much cheaper alternative try the E45 skincare range.
