Sussex seized control of this match in the 65 overs that were possible yesterday, and in claiming the important late wicket of John Crawley are likely to be in a position to enforce the follow-on today. Crawley was the only Hampshire batsman to offer protracted resistance after Murray Goodwin had led Sussex to maximum batting points in the morning.
Crawley had played delightfully for his 59-ball fifty, but was surprised by extra bounce from Ollie Rayner. Chris Adams held the second of two catches at slip off the 6ft 5in off spinner, who had removed Sean Ervine in his first over. All the Sussex bowlers played their part and, importantly on a slow surface, the ball swung.
Corey Collymore made the initial breakthrough in the second over, flattening Michael Brown's leg stump off an inside edge. Jason Lewry then found Michael Carberry's edge with an outswinger and, as soon as he was replaced at the Castle End, Ragheb Aga pinned Michael Lumb in front with a late inswinger.
For Hampshire, James Tomlinson deservedly claimed his second five-wicket haul of the season and the fourth of his career. Goodwin, who did not offer a chance in his 7½-hour stay, was ninth out when he became a maiden first-class victim for Liam Dawson, the left-arm spinner. His excellent 184 off 336 balls included 18 fours and a straight six, off David Balcombe.
