(day three of four: Warwickshire won toss)
Lunch
Derbyshire, with nine first-innings wickets in hand, are 298 runs behind Warwickshire
Salvaging a draw to retain an interest in promotion was Derbyshire’s priority, a task that Chris Rogers and Paul Borrington met with flowing bats. They shared the highest opening stand in either division of the championship this summer, overtaking a partnership of 157 by Bilal Shafayat and Will Jefferson for Nottinghamshire against Sussex the previous day.
Warwickshire used seven bowlers before Ian Salisbury, the fifth employed, deceived Paul Borrington with a low full toss that brought his dismissal leg-before for 62, with ten fours off 160 balls. Borrington had put on 176 in 51 overs with Rogers, who was 97 not out, with 15 fours from 147 balls at lunch when Derbyshire needed another 149 to avoid following on. With Ant Botha tweaking a hip flexor in his first over, Warwickshire even called on Tony Frost, a very occasional bowler.

Rogers, an anchorman with a sense of adventure, advanced to 150, with 20 fours and a six, off 226 balls but lost two partners, Redfern and Wavell Hinds along the way. Redfern, 18, was taken at second slip by Darren Maddy off Chris Martin, the New Zealand Test fast bowler, and Hinds eventually found temptation irresistible when lofting Salisbury to long on.
Salisbury, the former England leg-spinner, had bowled 16 overs unchanged in the continuing absence of Botha and had swift success when switching to the City End. The new ball became available at 289 for three and Warwickshire handed it immediately to Boyd Rankin, their 6ft 8in fast bowler, playing against his former county but without instant success, though Rogers, on 154, was dropped by Maddy at second slip off a no ball from Rankin.

Rogers completed 10,000 first-class runs when reaching 183 as Derbyshire not only avoided the follow on but narrowed the gap to a situation where a sixth consecutive championship draw at the ground looks inevitable.
Chris Woakes dismissed Greg Smith and Rikki Clarke in quick succession but Rogers strode on, surviving a Darren Maddy catch off a no ball when he had made 154. He advanced to 237 not out, with 32 fours and a six, off 323 balls but along with Jonathan Trott, who made 181 for Warwickshire, he will be among the few to remember this match with fondness.
