Life is sweet for Chris Rogers, the former Australia Test batsman, who recently led Derbyshire to a rare championship victory in his first match in official charge and yesterday completed 10,000 career runs in his second. Rogers, 30, mocked the thought that Warwickshire would bowl out his side for less than 327 and enforce the follow-on by expanding his 28th first-class hundred to 237 not out, with 32 fours and a six, off 323 balls. The downside is that a sixth consecutive championship draw at the ground appears inevitable.
Imperious strokeplay from Rogers underlined the fallibility of a Warwickshire attack that lacked Ant Botha, the slow left-arm bowler, who tweaked a hip flexor in his first over, but none of the eight others employed troubled him. His two flaws were a miscue on 110 that flew wide of Jim Troughton at mid-wicket off Chris Martin and edging to slip where Darren Maddy completed the catch off a no-ball from Boyd Rankin. Otherwise, Rogers commanded the day, the legacy of reconstructing his batting technique last winter after hard times with Northamptonshire the previous summer.
Salvaging a draw to retain an interest in promotion was Derbyshire's priority, a task that Rogers and Paul Borrington met with flowing bats. They shared the highest opening stand in either division of the championship this summer, overtaking a the 157 put on by Bilal Shafayat and Will Jefferson for Nottinghamshire against Sussex the previous day.
Warwickshire used eight bowlers before Ian Salisbury, the sixth employed, deceived Borrington with a low full toss that brought his dismissal for 62, with ten fours, off 160 balls. Rogers, an anchor man with attitude and a sense of adventure, advanced to 150, with 20 fours and a six, off 226 balls, but lost two partners, Redfern and Wavell Hinds along the way. Redfern, 18, was taken at second slip by Maddy off Martin, the New Zealand fast bowler, and Hinds eventually found temptation too much to resist when lofting Salisbury to long-on.
Salisbury, the former Surrey and England leg spinner, had bowled 16 overs unchanged in the continuing absence of Botha and had swift success when switching to the City End. The new ball became available at 289 for three and Warwickshire handed it immediately to Rankin, their 6ft 8in fast bowler, playing against his former county, but without immediate success. Derbyshire lost Greg Smith and Rikki Clarke to the promising Chris Woakes, but, in the final analysis, it will scarcely matter.
