Adrian Mutu has been ordered by Fifa to pay Chelsea £13.68 million pounds in compensation following his failed drugs test in 2004, the Premier League club have revealed.
The Romania striker, now at Fiorentina in Serie A, was sacked by Chelsea in October 2004 and banned for seven months after testing positive for cocaine.
The 29-year-old's fine is the biggest given to a footballer and was calculated by Fifa's dispute resolution chamber according to the value of the remaining period on his Stamford Bridge contract.
Chelsea expressed their delight at the ruling but Mutu is likely to appeal the penalty.
"Chelsea Football Club can confirm that it has received the decision from Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) on the claim made against Adrian Mutu," a statement on the club's website read. "Chelsea is delighted with the DRC's decision to award the club £13.68 million in compensation.
"This is an important decision for football. Not only did the DRC make us a very significant monetary award, the decision also recognised the damaging effect incidents involving drugs has on football and the responsibilities we all have in this area.
"Chelsea will now be following the process laid out in the DRC's decision to claim the money from Mutu."

Just because people envy a footballer does not make such a sentence right.
It is inhuman to even ask money from one whom you tried to destroy.
So you make a player feel miserable, spy on him (maybe even drug him), target test him, shout out loud that he's a junkie, fire him and make money out of it
Christian, Callatis,
People think that as Chelsea is owned by RA they should just waive goodbye to the money paid for Mutu. I think this is a great decision, and one that will make these playboys think twice before breaking the rules again.
Well done Chelsea for taking a moral stance and cancelling his contract .
Carl, Bristol,
Mutu wants to appeal as he did not have a say in how much Chelsea paid for him. However he would have taken a percentage cut in that fee.
The only losers in the whole ordeal were Chelsea.
I'll say again, a Great Decision.
Carl, Bristol,
I do not think that Mutu had made 17 million in his entire life as footboll player ! How can a club ask for so much ? He was already suspended for 6 month ! Plus Chelsea had multiple options to deal with the situation ! This fine is totaly excesive ! Remember Ferdinand case from M United ?

I just don't get this. What are Chelsea saying? They have a duty to protect the game from what? Mutu is a reformed character. He did that. Chelsea just turned their backs on him. If anything Mutu's a posterchild for overcoming drugs. Will Chelsea invest the money in a community scheme?

Good decision. Will make footballers think twice- what about Olympic athletes though? A ban is not enough, neither does jail time make sense. Strange how money can make people reform quickly.

So Mutu will have to work for the rest of his life like a slave to pay the russian? You must be joking.

This sets a good precedent. Players must follow the rules or clubs can hit them where it hurts most--their wallets. It also shows young footballers the dangers of decadent lifestyles.
