Claudio Ranieri, the Juventus coach, says he pulled out of a move for Xabi Alonso because he felt the Liverpool midfielder was "too slow".
The Italian club held talks with the Spain international during the summer, but Alonso remained at Anfield after Liverpool's protracted move for Gareth Barry, the Aston Villa midfielder, broke down.
"He [Alonso] was a player we wanted," Ranieri said. "But he is a player, who even though he is an extraordinary man and a great professional, left me perplexed by the slowness of his movement in midfield.
"In the midfield of Rafa Benitez's Liverpool, where all of them are little soldiers, he finds himself in a fantastic position.
"But in our midfield, he would have found it hard to support the midfield line seeing as [Juventus wingers] Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved are not players that come back to give support like Liverpool's wingers."

Ranieri is not good enough for a team like Juve.
Alonso is 20 times better then Poulsen.

Dario, perugia, italy
this coming from ranieri who thought 'lightning lampard' was the best midfielder on the planet.
nice one claudio - glad you didn't have the money - we'll happily keep that football brain on merseyside thanks.
paul, Southport, United Kingdom
I've got lots of time for Ranieri, but come on! Alonso is one of the best midfielders of his generation. A sublime passer of the ball with an unholy touch and fantastic balance on the ball. So what if he's slow, his mind is faster than 99.9% of the players in the Prem. Forshame Claudio!
Le Tundoir, Liverpool, England!
I thought he would have more class than to say that. So how come he only discovered this apparent 'slowness' when he couldn't afford Alonso's price?
Jan, Auckland, New Zealand
Sounds like sour grapes to me. Dalglish wasn't the fastest player in the world but his mind was 5 yards quicker than the opposition. Jan Molby another example.
We love you Xabi !
Marc , Liverpool, UK
The same could have been said of Souness but it all has to be taken in context. Both Gerrard and Torres have generated positive results from Alonso's ability to hold the midfield whilst maintaining the distribution, For a team that sit 11th position, Ranieri should focus on his own team
George, accrington,
Yes he looks slow, pretty much in the mould of Martin Peters who was a great player!
Sounds like the problem is Juventus' lack of supporting players to allow him to do his job; stay at Liverpool.
