Win a fitness package worth more than £3,000
The racing industry entertained the Minister of Sport yesterday and, on a day of cabinet reshuffling, Gerry Sutcliffe was happy to feel only the icy north winds of Newmarket Heath on his back. A man of earthy Yorkshire upbringing, Sutcliffe was struck by the vivid contrasts of a sport which shared its feature prizes here between the richest syndicate in racing and a small-time Newmarket yard of 35 horses.
Bushranger's commanding success in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes was another triumph for Coolmore's deep pockets and shrewd judgments. But its sister race, the 32Red.com Cheveley Park Stakes, was a quite different tale. Serious Attitude cost only 7,500 guineas and was a first group one win in 11 years for Rae Guest, her engaging trainer.
Guest is best known as the brother of Richard, whose colourful riding career climaxed with a Grand National win. The eldest of six children, Rae is now a pillar of the training community on Newmarket's Hamilton Road, a league below the platinum yards across town.
At his level, good horses are a surprise rather than an expectation, and almost always sourced at the bottom end of the bloodstock market. Guest admits he had few fancy dreams for this filly after buying her privately when she failed to reach her reserve in the yearling sales ring. “Her breeder told me she was my type,” he recalled, “but it wasn't until July that we knew she was something.”
Bravely, Guest opted to pay twice her purchase price to supplement her for the Cheveley Park, rather than running in the sales race on Thursday worth significantly more. Serious Attitude vindicated him in style, seeing off the equally unfashionable Aspen Darlin by half-a-length.
“We've waited a long time for one this good and it's what you get up in the morning for,” he said. “I felt she was good enough to do this and she's worth a lot more now - if she'd won the sales race it would have been quickly forgotten. Hopefully, we'll go for the Guineas in the spring.”
Jimmy Fortune, who rode the winner, is in prime position to advise, as the regular partner of the short-priced 1,000 Guineas favourite, Rainbow View. He explained: “I told the trainer after her previous win he might have the second best filly in the country - but, with all respect, I think Rainbow View would beat her every time.”
Guest, though, can now dream through the winter, even if not with the embarrassment of riches confronting Coolmore's ownership. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith were all present yesterday, testament to the regard in which Bushranger is held. This, plainly, could be the horse that brings David Wachman, his trainer, out of the inevitably long shadows cast by Aidan O'Brien.
Having won the Prix Morny in France on his previous start, Bushranger challenged late under Johnny Murtagh but comfortably overhauled Sayif, still clearly the best two-year-old maiden in training.
“He won very easily and he's getting better all the time,” Wachman said. “But the owners have a lot of good horses so we'll have to see what happens.” Bookmakers generally shortened Bushranger to 16-1 for the 2,000 Guineas and Cashman's now quote an Irish winner of the classic at 1-4. In other words, more of the same misery for British yards.
Richard Hannon is an exception to the general subservience and he continues to power towards a personal best tally of winners. Souter's Sister was a surprise even to him in winning the group three Oh So Sharp Stakes and, at 9,000 guineas, was another example of his eye for a bargain.
