Talks aimed at averting a planned series of airport strikes, including Manchester, that could cause chaos over the bank holiday weekend will be held.
Cabin staff and baggage handlers are due to take part in a series of 24-hour stoppages involving Manchester, Stansted, and Gatwick airports over the next few days.
But action could also take place at other airports, with union members also shortly to be balloted at Birmingham and Newcastle airports.
The two unions involved - Unite and the GMB - said their officials would meet bosses of the management company in the dispute, airport services business Swissport, at conciliation service Acas.
Last week it was announced that baggage handlers and cabin crew working for Swissport would hold 24-hour strikes at Stansted and Gatwick on bank holiday Monday and on Friday, August 29.
After an overwhelming ballot in favour of strike action by Unite staff, it was announced that there would be a 24-hour strike at Manchester Airport on Wednesday August 27 and another 24-hour strike there on Monday, September 1.
As many as 97% per cent of Unite members at Manchester voted in favour of strike action which could hit services run by, among others, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, KLM, Air France and Monarch.
Among airlines that could be affected by the Gatwick stoppage are Virgin, Monarch, First Choice and Thomsonfly, while the Stansted strike could hit easyJet, Ryanair and First Choice.
The unions involved are unhappy with a Swissport pay offer and are also concerned about new sick-pay arrangements.
A spokesman for Unite said that the union was looking for an improved offer before any progress could be made on trying to avert the strikes.
Gary Pearce of the GMB said: “These are last-ditch talks and the employers need to put more money on the table if they are to avoid a strike next Monday.”

these staff have no ethics towards people who have saved for a well desearved holiday. if they think its so bad then they should leave so the job can go to someone else who actually want to work
m, blackpool,
If the baggage handlers knew the hours that they would have to put in before taking the job why start complaining now. My son and his girlfriend have saved for a long time to come over to Australia on the 1st of September the flight is long enough without delays on top.

The strike is ridiculous. I fly on the 28th so it is likely that i will get disrupted. Swissport, dont cave in to these demands, sack the lot of them and create jobs for people who actually want to work! The ironic thing is that they are only annoying the travelers needed to keep them in a job!!!!!!
Matt, Blackpool, England
I disagree with the person from Manchester who says we are being selfish. I appreciate what they are saying but don't you think most people work long hours and with difficult people.I am due to go on holiday the day of the strike and feel so annoyed that the innocent people are going to suffer!!!!
L.Ainscow , Manchester,
once again the general public are to take the brunt. After 12 months of hard saving familys will be delayed and chaos caused. Its us that keep you in work remember so why ruin it for us.
karen wilson, liverpool, England
Ridiculous. They obviously don't care for their customers, if they did they would not stage a protest at such a time when so many are going on holiday. It's hard enough saving up so much money during the current economic climate to get away as it is, now theres another obstacle.
T Lay, Manchester, England
start new staff and keep the customers happy just for a change we have had enough bother with airports strikes never solve anything get back to work and do your job how would thay like there wedding plans canceled
joe bliss, leeds, yorkshire
Do a ronald and sack all those who refuse to negotiate an agreed agenda for settlement , on grounds dictated by the realities of costings and profitability.
Run the outfit as a private company has to be run to survive.
Ditch the Brit. trad model, and get real.
RON REECE, blackmore, uk
Unbelievable.. I've waited three years to take my family away, flying on 27th August and now we face disruptions, its an absolute disgrace.
S Johnson, Blackpool, UK
I think the above comments are selfish as they dont really know how hard staff work each day starting as early as 0300 in the morning and not getting a break till 4pm, I think they deserve to be treated better and have all rights to STRIKE they get up to passengers that have no manners or morals.
I, Manchester, lancs
all this serves to do is demonstrate the niave manner in which Unite has handled its wage increase negotiations, the whole country is affected by rising living costs - so what gives these individuals the right to affect long saved for holidays by their actions - completely despicable
S Turner, Crewe, England
can't believe there going to ruin our wedding plans on departure and arrrival, it's not on.
rob, hull, uk
Yet again, baggage handlers and check-in staff have little concern about their customers and intend to cause chaos at Manchester. If these people expect to get the public sympathy vote - I think not. Lets hope Manchester can cope with the chaos on this occasion.!!
