Is it possible to take a ferry from Cyprus to Egypt? We have been to Cyprus several times, but I am less sure about spending much time in Egypt. However it has always been a dream to see the pyramids.
- Wendy Longley, Gillingham
Better than that, you can take a mini cruise that is timed perfectly to give you a full day in Egypt and time at the Pyramids too.
Cyprus Cruises run the cruise, which leaves Limassol every Monday at 2:30pm and arrives into Egypt¹s Port Said at 7am the next day. The vessel heads back to Cyprus at 7pm that day and arrives back into Limassol at 11am on the Wednesday.
The vessel used is the 10,000-ton Salamis Glory. It was built as a cruise ship in 1962 in Croatia, and was substantially rebuilt in 2000, and then refurbished in 2006. It has a pool, restaurants, and evening entertainment.
You can book your shore excursion with the shipping line too, which includes a coach from the Port at Port Said to Cairo, a short cruise for lunch on the Nile, and visit to the Pyramids and Egyptian Museum. It¹s pretty well organised, but if the traffic is bad, and it often is as you get closer to Cairo, it eats into you time at the Pyramids and the museum.
You won¹t find the top-notch trappings of a luxury cruise, like cabin service and dry cleaning, but it isn¹t a ferry full of trucks and truckers either. It is unpretentious and well maintained, plus there is a decidedly holiday atmosphere, helped along by the friendly crew.
A two berth air-conditioned cabin with en suite facilities costs £223pp, including port taxes. The tour to Cairo is £57pp, and coach transfers from Limassol hotels to the port are £11pp, or from Larnaca and Paphos for £19, and other resorts for £22.
Book through Cruise Cyprus (00 357 24 665408, www.cruisecyprus.com), or with a local travel agent in Cyprus. If you are staying at one of the bigger hotels, you can book through them too.
